The Properties of Satellite Galaxies in External Systems. Ii. Photometry and Colors
نویسنده
چکیده
In this second paper dedicated to the study of satellite galaxies we present broad-band photometry in the B, V , R and I filters of 49 satellite galaxies orbiting giant isolated spiral galaxies. First analysis of the properties of these objects are presented by means of color–color and color–magnitude diagrams for earlyand late-type satellites. Although we find differences in the slope of the V − I vs. Mv color magnitude diagram, as a whole, the relations are in agreement with the trends known to date for galaxies of similar magnitudes in nearby clusters of galaxies. Comparison with the relations found for satellites in the Local Group allows us to sample better the bright end of the luminosity function of satellite galaxies and extends for brighter objects the validity of the color–magnitude relation found for dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. Most of the E/S0 galaxies in our sample show a negative color gradient with values similar to those known for early type galaxies in other environments. E+A galaxies in the near-IR: Broad band photometry
We present near-IR photometry of a selected sample of southern hemisphere E+A galaxies. The sample includes 50 galaxies from nearby (z ∼ 0.05) and distant (z ∼ 0.3) clusters as well as E+A galaxies from the field (z ∼ 0.1). We also observed 13 normal early-type galaxies from the field and from clusters to be compared with the E+A sample. The photometry includes J , H and Ks apparent magnitudes ...
متن کاملSurface Photometry of Nearby Field Galaxies: the Data
We have obtained integrated spectra and multi-filter photometry for a representative sample of ∼200 nearby galaxies. These galaxies span the entire Hubble sequence in morphological type, as well as a wide range of luminosities (MB = −14 to −22) and colors (B−R = 0.4 to 1.8). Here we describe the sample selection criteria and the U,B,R surface photometry for these galaxies. The spectrophotometri...

متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...
متن کاملStar Formation in Galaxies with Large Lower Surface Brightness Disks
We present B, R, and Hα imaging data of 19 large disk galaxies whose properties are intermediate between classical low surface brightness galaxies and ordinary high surface brightness galaxies. We use data taken from the Lowell 1.8m Perkins telescope to determine the galaxies’ overall morphology, color, and star formation properties. Morphologically, the galaxies range from Sb through Irr and i...
